Ruto sends passionate appeal to newly-elected Ghana president Mahama
President William Ruto on Monday, December 9, 2024, congratulated the newly-elected President of Ghana John Mahama who won the country’s presidential elections to stage a comeback that also saw his party National Democratic Congress (NDC) win the majority parliamentary seats.
In a statement, Ruto extended his appreciation for the West African country’s incoming head of state, observing that the bilateral ties between Kenya and Ghana remained steadfast.
“On behalf of the Government and the People of Kenya and on my own behalf, I convey to Your Excellency and through you to the Government and the People of the Republic of Ghana my heartfelt congratulations on your successful election as the President of the Republic of Ghana,” Ruto said.
Adding: “Excellency, as you assume office, I take cognizance of the historic brotherly relations that Kenya and Ghana enjoy founded on our common struggles for self-determination as well as the desire for peaceful and prosperous nations. Our nations share a deep-rooted friendship and a commitment to regional cooperation and mutual prosperity.”
Ruto commended the country for conducting a largely peaceful election, noting that it indicated the level of maturity and institutional integrity in the nation.
“I must at the outset commend Ghana for the conduct of the just ended elections which clearly demonstrated your country’s democratic maturity and institutional integrity; factors critical to the sustainable stability and development of your great country,” he observed.
Ruto stated that it was his desire to further enhance and consolidate cooperation at bilateral, regional and international forums in areas of mutual interest for the socio-economic development of Kenyans, Ghanaians and the continent at large.
Ghana elections
The Ghana elections were conducted on Saturday, December 7, 2024, but by Sunday, the country’s Vice President who contested for the presidency, Muhamadu Bawumia, conceded before the Ghana Electoral Commission (EC) announced the final results.
Mahama had served the country from 2012 to 2016 before he was defeated in the elections by the outgoing president Nana Akuffo-Ado who served two terms.
In the elections on Saturday, Mahama campaigned against the government’s preferred candidate and won, leading to an early concession where VP Bawumia stressed that it was important to maintain the investors’ confidence in Ghana as a politically stable country.
“I have, this morning, received a congratulatory call from my brother Dr. Bawumia, following my emphatic victory in Saturday’s election. Thank you, Ghana,” Mahama said in a post on X on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
