President William Ruto has announced plans to construct over 3,500 new classrooms to accommodate the increasing number of children enrolling in schools in a move to enhance education infrastructure in Nairobi County.

Ruto on Monday, January 13, 2025, officially opened the Lenana School Primary tuition block, after which he revealed that the construction of the classrooms to accommodate the increased enrolment of children in schools, was underway.

In a statement shared via his official X account, the head of state also revealed that he had handed over school uniforms to more 2,500 learners in Ng’ando, Dagoretti South.

Ruto on mentoring children

Ruto further committed that his administration will educate, mentor and support the children to exploit their talents so that they can productively contribute to the transformation of the country.

“We will educate, mentor and support our children to exploit their talents so that they can productively contribute to the transformation of our country. Officially opened the Lenana School Primary tuition block and handed over school uniforms to more 2,500 learners in Ng’ando, Dagoretti South. We are also building more than 3,500 new classrooms in Nairobi County to accommodate the increased enrolment of children in schools,” President Ruto stated.

The president’s announcement comes as schools across Nairobi face increasing pressure to accommodate the growing student population, driven by the government’s push for universal access to basic education.

The over 3,500 new classrooms are expected to alleviate overcrowding and create a conducive learning environment for students.

Grade 9 classrooms

The head of state’s commitment also comes as the government pushes to complete the 16,000 classrooms required by the first cohort of Grade 9 learners who are already in the second week of the 2025 academic calendar.

Education CS Julius Ogamba during the opening of schools last week said they will ensure in the next one month all the Junior Secondary School (JSS) classrooms that are not yet complete have been completed.

According to the CS, 14,500 out of the 16,000 classrooms required by the first cohort of Grade 9 learners have already been constructed by the Ministry of Education and the National Government Constituency Fund(NG-CDF) across the country.
