Abdi Mohamud sworn in as EACC CEO
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Secretary/Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud has been sworn in to take over the secretariat of the anti-graft body from Twalib Mbarak on Monday, January 13, 2025.
In a statement, Chief Justice Martha Koome presided over the swearing-in of the former EACC Deputy CEO who has now formally assumed the office.
“Chief Justice Martha Koome presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Abdi Ahmed Mohamud as the new CEO of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) at the Supreme Court, Nairobi. The Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Hon Winfridah Mokaya, administered the oath during the event that was attended by EACC Chairperson Bishop David Oginde and the Chair of Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) Hon George Murugara, DCI Mohamed Amin, among others,” the statement read.
Intelligence expert
Mohamud, a seasoned intelligence expert, emerged as the top candidate after competing against 14 finalists from a pool of 172 applicants. The interviews for the shortlisted candidates were held from November 19 to 21, 2024.
The new EACC CEO equally is an advocate of the high court with an investigative career spanning over 30 years.
Mohamud started his law enforcement career in 1989 as a cadet inspector at the Kenya Police Service. He later joined the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC), now EACC, in 2005 as a Senior Officer in charge of the Rapid Response Division and rose through the ranks to head the Directorate of Investigations.
Twalib Mbarak
As Mbarak’s deputy, he was responsible for deputizing the Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of EACC in the discharge of his statutory, administrative and policy responsibilities in the daily operations and management of the Commission.
Equally, he was charged, as the head of the Directorate of Investigations, with managing and coordinating investigations and he has been instrumental in the investigation of several high-profile cases in Kenya and beyond.
Mohamud also holds a Master of Science Degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, Bachelor of Laws Degree from Mt. Kenya University and a Professional Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
His predecessor Mbarak equally started his career in the military before branching out into intelligence.
This saw him work with the United Nations, at the Horn of Africa and at the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and KenGen before joining EACC.
Mbarak took over from Halake Waqo whose six-year tenure expired in 2019.
