Ruto mourns Cyrus Jirongo after tragic accident
Kenya continues to mourn the sudden death of former Lugari Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister Cyrus Jirongo, whose passing in a tragic road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway on Saturday, December 13, 2025, has sent shockwaves across the country.
Leaders from across the political divide have taken to social media to pay tribute to a man widely remembered as bold, outspoken and deeply influential in Kenya’s political journey, particularly from the 1990s.

Jirongo’s death has not only reopened memories of his colourful political life but has also united rival camps in grief, with many acknowledging his impact on national politics, business and grassroots leadership in Western Kenya.

Leading the tributes, President William Ruto, in an X post posted on Saturday, December 13, 2025, described Jirongo as a close friend and a rare personality whose life was defined by resilience, courage and generosity.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo,” President Ruto said.
The President went on to reflect on Jirongo’s determination and refusal to be limited by adversity, noting that he embodied the spirit of self-made leadership.
“Jirongo was a relentless go-getter, a seasoned businessman, and a consummate politician who refused to be defined, let alone defeated, by life’s challenges,” he said.
Ruto also highlighted Jirongo’s unique character, saying he combined toughness with warmth in a way that earned him respect even among political opponents.
“He was a fighter in every sense: blunt yet warm, bold yet approachable, enlightened and endlessly entrepreneurial,” the President said.

In his tribute, Ruto emphasised Jirongo’s generosity and willingness to support others, describing it as one of his most defining traits.
“Above all, he was generous to a fault; always willing to give, to uplift, and to back others with his time, resources, and belief,” he added.
Concluding his message, the President acknowledged Jirongo’s lasting influence on Kenya’s political landscape.
“Never one to shrink from a tough stand or a grand idea, he lived on his own terms and left an indelible mark on our political landscape. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace, my friend,” Ruto said.
Gachagua mourns Jirongo
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, in his condolence message, focused on Jirongo’s years of service to the people of Lugari and the pain surrounding his sudden death.
“It is with deep pain I have learnt of the passing on of former Cabinet Minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo following a tragic road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway,” Gachagua said.

He recalled Jirongo’s long tenure as a constituency leader, noting his dedication to the people he represented.
“As Lugari MP from 1997–2002 and 2007–2013, Jirongo served his Lugari constituents with dedication,” Gachagua added.
Kalonzo Musyoka’s message
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also joined the nation in mourning, describing Jirongo as a charismatic politician whose voice stood out in Kenya’s national discourse.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Cyrus Jirongo. His tragic death in a road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway is a profound loss to his family, the people of Lugari, and the nation at large,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo praised Jirongo’s courage and independence, saying these qualities defined his political life.

“Jirongo was a bold and charismatic leader who never shied away from standing out, challenging convention, or pursuing his convictions with courage and clarity,” he said.
Extending condolences on behalf of his family and the Wiper Party, Kalonzo noted that Jirongo’s contribution would be remembered for years to come.
“His contribution to Kenya’s public life and his distinctive voice in our national discourse will be remembered. May God grant his family strength and comfort during this difficult time, and may the soul of Cyrus Jirongo rest in eternal peace,” Kalonzo said.
Matiang’i: Jirongo’s death a national loss
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i also paid tribute, describing Jirongo’s death as a national loss that goes beyond party politics.
“It is with profound shock that I have learnt of the passing of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo,” Matiang’i said.

He acknowledged Jirongo’s role in Kenya’s democratic journey, especially during critical political moments.
“The death of Jirongo is a great loss not only to his family, but also to the nation. He was a steadfast politician who contributed significantly to our nation’s democratization process over several decades,” Matiang’i added.
