Ruto calls for peace, unity and compassion as Muslims mark Eid-ul-Adha
By Francis Muli, May 26, 2026President William Ruto has sent a message of goodwill to Muslim faithful in Kenya and across the world as they mark Eid-ul-Adha, calling for unity, compassion and peaceful coexistence during the holy celebration.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 26, 2027, the president said the occasion, which comes at the end of the Day of Arafat and during the Hajj pilgrimage, reflects the values of sacrifice, faith and obedience demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim.
“As Muslim faithful across our country and around the world mark the end of the Day of Arafat and the beginning of Eid-ul-Adha, I extend my warmest wishes for a peaceful and joyous celebration,” Ruto said.
The president noted that Eid-ul-Adha continues to inspire humility, service to others and compassion, values he said are important in strengthening national unity and social harmony.
“The occasion also calls upon us to remember the less fortunate, strengthen the bonds of unity and coexistence, and reaffirm our shared commitment to peace and harmony as one nation,” he said.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command before a ram was provided in his place.
The celebration coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims across the world traditionally mark the day through prayers, charitable giving and the slaughtering of animals, with meat shared among family members, neighbours and vulnerable households.
In Kenya, thousands of Muslim faithful are expected to gather in mosques and prayer grounds in cities and towns including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Garissa and Isiolo to observe the celebrations.
Ruto concluded his message by wishing Muslims good health, joy and blessings during the festivities.
“To all Muslim faithful, I wish you and your families joy, good health, and abundant blessings during this holy celebration. Eid Mubarak,” he said.
