Ruto attends Piny Luo Festival in Migori hours after explosive scare
President William Ruto is among the guests gracing the ongoing Piny Luo edition in Migori County, a day after the discovery of explosive devices in the area.
Ruto’s visit on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, came a day after police retrieved explosive devices at a bridge in Nyatike subcounty, on a route that the president was scheduled to use.
The head of state began his tour by attending a swimming and boat racing competition in Senye Beach, Muhuru Ward.
The president, who is being hosted by Governor Ochillo Ayacko, will also tour Thimlich Ohinga, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
According to Paul Londo, the Nyatike police commander, the multi-agency security team recovered seven pieces of an explosive device found planted under the bridge after being alerted by the police.
Disarmed
“The ATPU unit from Migori has indeed confirmed they were explosives, but they have since disarmed them with no injuries reported. We call upon the members of the public to provide information on the people who were involved and allow the law take its course,” he stated on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
He, however, allayed fears over the incident after the officers from the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) disarmed the explosives.
Lundu further urged locals to volunteer information on individuals suspected of planting the explosives.
Migori shoe incident
The scare comes after Ruto was the subject of a rare security breach during his previous visit to the county on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
The incident occurred in Kuria West, where Ruto was addressing residents as part of a government development tour.

As the head of state spoke on economic reforms, a shoe was launched from the crowd, striking him on the upper body.
Video footage captured the moment as Ruto instinctively raised his hand to block the object, pausing only briefly before continuing his address.
The security lapse elicited quite a debate among Kenyans and politicians, with many expressing concerns over the shocking incident.
Kitutu Chache South Member of Parliament Anthony Kibagendi cautioned that the president could have been assassinated had the individual who hurled a shoe at him been armed with a more dangerous weapon.
A subsequent police crackdown saw a number of youth arrested in connection with the breach.
