Relief for Sonko as tribunal orders KRA to unfreeze his accounts
The Tax Appeal Tribunal has ordered the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to unfreeze former Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko’s six bank accounts domiciled at Equity Bank.
The orders issued on Friday, April 17, 2026, lifted the agency notices that had left his six bank accounts at Equity Bank remaining frozen.
“An order is hereby issued lifting the agency notices issued by the respondent (KRA) pending the hearing and determination of the appeal,” the tribunal ordered.
The order stems from a notice of motion that the former county chief filed at the Tax Appeals Tribunal after the bank failed to unfreeze his account despite orders issued by the court lifting the freeze on his several accounts.
In the application, Sonko sought a review or an amendment of the orders issued on November 14, 2025, to include all his bank accounts that were subjected to the agency notices but were inadvertently omitted from the said orders.

He stated that the review was to include, but not be limited to, six accounts with Ksh and one USD account.
“That the amended order does expressly direct the KRA to lift agency notices on all affected accounts,” Sonko sought in his application.
Further, he sought to have the Tribunal correct any clerical or accidental errors in the said order, including any erroneous or incomplete account numbers in it.
According to court papers, the Tribunal, on November 14, 2025, issued orders directing the lifting of agency notices on specified bank accounts.
However, according to Sonko, the said orders inadvertently omitted certain accounts which were part of his original application and were equally subjected to agency notices.

Omission constituted accidental slip
In his application, Sonko revealed that the omission constituted an accidental slip or clerical error, amenable to correction by the tribunal.
Sonko noted that the bank had expressly indicated that they can only comply strictly with the accounts listed in the tribunal order and cannot act on omitted accounts, leading to some accounts remaining frozen.
