Raila suggests strategy to end frequent fires at Toi Market

By , August 5, 2024

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has suggested that a perimetre wall is needed to be constructed around Toi Market in Kibra to deter frequent fire incidences.

The former Lang’ata Member of Parliament (MP) made the comment after visiting the market, which was gutted down by fire a few days ago. Raila said the construction of the perimetre wall should be prioritised by the leaders.

“Today, we stood with the Toi Market traders who were severely hit by the recent fire. To protect their wares and livelihoods, a perimetre wall is urgently needed. I call on the relevant authorities to act swiftly and make this a priority,” Raila said in a post on his X handle on Monday, August 5, 2024.

Raila was accompanied by Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna, who also addressed the traders at the market.

Raila’s visit comes days after Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja was pelted with stones when he visited the market.

After facing the anger from the traders, the governor promised to rebuild the market despite the hostility he faced.

“Visited traders affected by fire incidents at Toi Market and later at Umoja 2. Poleni sana to all affected and condolences to the bereaved. Sadly, we lost 4 souls in the Toi inferno. We will support their families during this trying time. For the traders, we will rebuild and help you get back on your feet.

“We had a total of 7 fires across the city last night, and all affected will get support. For those who caused incitement, it is well, nothing will stop us from supporting our people,” Sakaja said.

Babu’s take

On his part, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino blamed the county, saying its slow response made the fire incident worse.

“Leadership is about service and availability to our people when they need us most. Visited the people of Toi Market Kibra constituency following the unfortunate fire that killed four people and destroyed businesses.

“I am disappointed by the weak response by the County Government of Nairobi. The fire response service took over 8 hours to arrive on the scene after the worst was over. Nairobians continue to pay a heavy price for the incompetence of the current leadership that prioritizes taxing cats to saving lives!” Babu said.

Just like other markets in the city like Gikomba, Toi Market has been battling frequent fire incidences.
