Nandi county government is in a race against time to ensure the Sh80 million Eliud Kipchoge Athletics Training Complex in Kapsabet is completed on time.

The facility, whose construction started in September last year in honour of  world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge, has so far gobbled Sh33 million with Phase One of the works that consist a state-of-the-art gym, a conference hall, main offices, training track and an athletes’ lounge at 95 per cent.

Phase two of the construction has just started and is estimated to cost Sh50 million and it will feature a physiotherapy room, 200-bed hostel, a second conference hall, and a restaurant among other facilities.

The centre, which will also act as a Hall of Fame for stars from the region, is expected to be completed in December and will be used to nurture upcoming athletics talents besides hosting major events, starting with trials for the 2021 World Championships.

With the slow progress of construction works at Eldoret’s Kipchoge Keino Stadium, athletes in Rift Valley have been left with no training facility of note and there are hopes that the Kapsabet complex will ease that burden.
