PS Kiptoo defends supplementary budget, vows to protect economy amid pressure
Kenya’s Treasury is under pressure to balance rising government spending needs with the need to keep the economy stable, as households and businesses continue to feel the weight of global and local economic challenges.
Treasury Principal Secretary (PS) Chris Kiptoo, on Thursday, March 18, 2026, addressed lawmakers in Mombasa, outlining the government’s plan to manage the economy through a supplementary budget while maintaining growth and stability.
In a statement shared on X on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the PS explained the government’s focus on keeping the economy steady, even as spending demands continue to rise across key sectors.

“We are focused on sustaining Kenya’s economic resilience, strengthening revenue mobilisation, and addressing emerging expenditure pressures while safeguarding macroeconomic stability,” the statement reads.

“Despite global uncertainties, our economy remains on a strong growth trajectory, supported by reforms under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Kiptoo further broke down the purpose of the supplementary budget, saying it is designed to channel resources into sectors that directly affect people’s daily lives and national stability, including education, security, disaster response and infrastructure development.
“This Supplementary Budget provides targeted interventions to support priority areas, including education, security, disaster response, infrastructure development, and the enhancement of digital public finance systems.
