Homa Bay is undergoing major transformation as the nation plans to celebrate Madaraka Day on June 1, 2025, in the county.

Speaking about the infrastructural developments on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga revealed that the county has seen transformation that has never been witnessed before.

“I would like to thank the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, for the cooperation and planning that we have put together. We have seen a lot of improvements on the roads in the town; the dualing of the main road has begun, and a lot of KURA roads are open, and a lot of the work that has been done is impressive,” Wanga said.

Road improvement

“We hope to visit with the CS to see how to improve on the progress of the road from Sindo-Magunga-Sori, the road from Kanyadhiang’ to Kadel, the road from Oboke to Rangwe and the one from Kadongo to Gendia,” Wanga noted.

Several roads within Homa Bay town, including access roads to and from the Raila Odinga Stadium, which will be the venue of the 62nd Madaraka celebrations, have also been improved.

“We are also happy with the progress at the Kabunde Airstrip and the Homa Bay Pier at the lake,” Wanga stated.

“We are happy to be here to supervise the work that is going on in this region. There was a brief pause due to the ongoing rains, but we hope to spend the next one week here to complete all the outstanding work,” Chirchir said.

“Earlier on the Madaraka Day was to go to Kitui, but it was flipped, and Kitui will now be hosting the Mashujaa Day, which will take place in October. I want to assure the people of Homa Bay that they will see a difference,” he added.

KDF arrive in Homa Bay

Even as the infrastructural development is ongoing, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) advance team is holed up in the county in readiness for the event, which will take place in Homa Bay for the first time.

“Preparations for the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations are in their final stages, with several activities underway at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County. These include rehearsals for the security forces parade,” KDF revealed in a statement on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

Adding: “Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel are on the ground making preparations for the parades and are working closely with other national security agencies to ensure the event’s security and safety.”

The 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations will be held under the theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs”.
