An autopsy conducted on the body of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has confirmed that he died from massive injuries caused by blunt force trauma in a road crash.

Family pathologist Joseph Ndung’u detailed the extensive injuries during a press briefing on December 17, 2025.

“We have looked at the body of the late Cyrus Jirongo and it had multiple injuries, there were multiple fractures, there were some fractures involving the right hand, two fractures in the right hand, there were fractures of both lower limbs (the legs),” Ndung’u stated.

He further explained the severe internal damage, noting that there was perforation of the heart, with rupture of most of the major vessels that connect the heart.

“There was a crush injury to the chest, with multiple ribs fracture, there was perforation of the heart, with rapture of most of the major vessels that connect the heart, there were also bleeding in to the chest cavity, and also crush injuries going to the abdomen with the crush of the liver, with also bleeding into the abdominal cavity,” Ndung’u said.

“There was also transection of the spinal code at the thorasic level and as a result of our examination, we formed our opinion that the late Cyrus Jirongo died as a result of crush injury to the chest, the abdomen and also spinal injuries due to blunt force trauma.”

Circumstances of the crash

Jirongo, aged 64, died in the early hours of Saturday, 13 December 2025, following a head-on collision between his Mercedes Benz and a Climax Company passenger bus on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai in Naivasha. Police reports indicate the incident occurred around 3 a.m., with Jirongo pronounced dead at the scene.

The family has called for a thorough government investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, raising questions about his final movements before the crash. While police have described the incident as a road accident, Jirongo’s family insists that several unanswered questions remain. “How did he find himself in a car, in Naivasha, driving back to Nairobi?” said George Khaniri, the co-chairperson of the burial committee.

Calls for investigation

Former Westlands MP Fred Gumo, part of the burial committee, urged authorities to trace Jirongo’s movements using available technology.

“We are asking the administration officers to do everything possible and tell us what really happened,” Gumo said. “There are cameras everywhere these days. They must have seen this car as it left Karen, went towards Naivasha, and when it turned back towards Nairobi.”

The family has formed a committee to oversee burial arrangements, with Jirongo set to be laid to rest on 30 December 2025 at his home in Lumakanda, Kakamega County.
