Popular DJ faces charges over link to wife’s suicide
Michael Macharia, popularly known as DJ Brownskin, has been charged in a Nairobi court in connection with the death of his wife, Sharon Njeri, by suicide.
This follows a video that surfaced in April and went viral showing DJ Brownskin recording his wife taking poison.
Appearing before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, DJ Brownskin denied three charges of aiding suicide, neglect to prevent a felony and destroying evidence by deleting the video clips he had uploaded on his social media regarding the incident at their house in July last year.
“That on July 29, 2022 at Kariobangi South, Buruburu Sub-county in Nairobi county, the DJ counselled his late wife Njeri to kill herself by taking poison,” the charge sheet reads.
He was also charged that on the same date and place knowing that Njeri was designed to commit suicide failed to use all reasonable causes to prevent the suicide.
Further, DJ Brownskin faced another charge that on diverse dates between June 1, 2023 to date while within Kasarani Sub-county within Nairobi county while knowing that his phone number might be required to be produced as evidence in the case, willfully deleted the videos with intent to prevent the same from being tendered in court as evidence.
After denying the charges, the accused urged the court to release him on reasonable bail terms saying he will abide by all conditions set by the court.
The court heard that the DJ has been in custody for more than a week as police sought to complete investigations into the matter.
The prosecution however opposed the application, prompting Onyina to detain the DJ until Thursday pending a pre-bail report from the probation officers.
The DJ was arrested on June 5, this year.
