Pope Leo appoints Father Vincent Odundo as Kisumu’s auxiliary bishop
Father Vincent Odundo, the Parish Priest of St. James the Apostle Parish in Magadi, has been appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kisumu.
The announcement, made following a decree from His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, was welcomed with joy across the Archdiocese, Kisumu County, and Kenya’s wider Catholic community.
Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o took to his social media account on Sunday, December 14, 2025, to congratulate Father Odundo on his appointment.
In his statement, Governor Nyong’o described the elevation as a recognition of Father Odundo’s leadership and dedication to serving God and the community since his ordination in 2008.

“Father Odundo’s appointment is a source of immense pride for Kisumu. It reflects his commitment to the Church and the people he serves,” Governor Nyong’o said. He also praised the Archbishop of Kisumu, His Grace Maurice Makumba Muhatia, for mentoring clergy in the Archdiocese, noting that the swift rise of Father Odundo demonstrated the spiritual health and leadership potential within Kisumu.
“I must equally salute the leadership and vision of the Archbishop of Kisumu Archdiocese, His Grace Most. Rev. Maurice Makumba Muhatia. In the relatively short time since His Grace took up the crosier in Kisumu, he has demonstrated powerful mentorship capabilities, culminating in the elevation of Father Odundo.”
“It is a true blessing for a shepherd to have ‘given birth’ to another Bishop so swiftly, a clear sign of the vibrant spiritual health and leadership potential flourishing within our Archdiocese.”

Governor urges leadership excellence
The governor encouraged Father Odundo as he prepares to take up his new responsibilities, praying for God’s guidance and wisdom in his leadership. He also expressed confidence that the new Auxiliary Bishop would continue supporting social justice, education, and community welfare in the county.
“As Fr. Odundo prepares to receive the papal stave and take up this elevated responsibility, we pray that the Almighty God grants him His endless graces, wisdom, and strength. May his light shine brightly as he helps lead the devoted flock of this great Archdiocese of Kisumu.”
“We look forward to working closely with the new Bishop-elect to further the cause of social justice, education, and community welfare in our County.”
Father Odundo’s elevation comes at a time when the Catholic Church in Kenya continues to play a key role in social and community development. His experience in parish leadership and dedication to his congregation are expected to strengthen the Archdiocese’s work in spiritual guidance and community support.
