A Kiambu politician suspected of murdering her husband was yesterday formally charged.

Gladys Chania (pictured) and co-accused Morris Mbugua were charged, before Kiambu High Court Judge Mary Kasango, with  jointly killing George Mwangi.

The suspects denied the charges.  The court heard that the accused planned and executed the murder of Mwangi who was married to Chania for 28 years.

She will remain in remand at the Langata Women Prison for another 27 days after which her application to be released on bail will be heard.

Mbugua will be remanded at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

The suspect was last week released on a Sh1 million cash bail and a surety of a similar amount but failed to raise the money.

She will appear before the court on November 29.

Blunt object

Last month, a postmortem conducted by government pathologist Johnston Odour established that Mwangi died after he was hit with a blunt object at the back of the head.

His body also had cuts on the hands, an indication there was a physical struggle with the killers.

Chania, who unsuccessfully ran for the Kiambu Woman Rep seat in the August election was arrested two weeks ago in connection with the macabre murder of her 58-year-old husband.

His decomposed body was found dumped at Kieni forest.

The Rwanda-based contractor came to Kenya on September 13, only to meet his death.

Mwangi was last week buried at his Mang’u home in a sombre ceremony which lasted less than two hours.

Chania didn’t attend the burial as she was in police custody but she  wrote an eulogy which was read on her behalf by a relative.
