Four police officers linked to a Sh2 million forex bureau botched robbery with violence case have been freed due to lack of evidence.

Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi on Friday released Daniel Wambua Mthini, Eliud Kipkurui Bor, Stanley Gitonga and Nicholas Murira after the investigating officer told the court he did not find supportive evidence.

The officer said an inquiry file has been opened and the matter would be dealt with administratively under the Police Standing Rules.

The court further directed that cell phones of the four be returned to them in 14 days after forensic analysis.

Defence lawyer Zachariah Mwambi had applied to have the cell phones returned to the suspects, but prosecution counsel James Gachoka opposed this.

The officers were arrested on January 9 after a report was filed at Nairobi regional command centre about Hassan Abdi Omar of Afro Ltd. He had withdrawn Sh2 million from a bank when he and colleague Mohamed Hassan were confronted by the suspects who claimed to be police officers.

A tussle arose but the complainant managed to pass the bag containing the money to his security guard.
