Police vow action after viral video shows cab driver assaulted, urge him to report

In a series of responses issued on their official X account on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, and Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the police urged the driver to report the matter to the nearest police station for appropriate action.
“Kindly have him report to the nearest police station. We will take appropriate action. This is a serious crime,” the Kenya Police Service stated.

Fare dispute turns violent
The incident in the viral video reportedly occurred after the driver transported a group of women home following a night out, with trouble beginning when the passengers refused to pay the agreed fare.
According to reports, when the driver insisted on payment, the situation escalated into a violent confrontation, as seen in the video.
The women, who appeared intoxicated in the video, first subjected him to verbal abuse before physically attacking him.
Images and videos of the incident shared on social media showed visible damage to the vehicle, highlighting the intensity of the altercation.
Public outrage
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation on social media, with Kenyans expressing concern over the safety of cab drivers and demanding justice for the victim.
In a statement issued on her Facebook account on December 23, 2025, the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Gender Affairs, Anne Wang’ombe, condemned the attack, saying that such actions violate the standards of a civil society.
“We are profoundly disturbed by the viral video depicting several women assaulting a taxi driver and allegedly refusing to pay for services rendered. Such conduct is utterly unacceptable and violates the standards of a civil society,” she wrote.
The Principal Secretary urged the driver to reach out to the ministry for support, vowing to take action against the individuals involved in the incident and ensure that they are held accountable for their actions.
“The State Department for Gender condemns this act of violence unequivocally. We encourage the gentleman involved to reach out for support through our toll-free helpline at 1195 or via direct message,” the PS stated.
“Furthermore, we urge anyone with information regarding this incident or the identities of those involved to contact us. Those responsible must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” she added.
