Detectives from Lucky Summer Police Station have arrested an individual believed to be the mastermind behind a counterfeit currency syndicate in Nairobi, after recovering a large haul of fake US dollars.

In a statement posted on its X account on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation targeting a white Toyota Prado suspected of ferrying counterfeit currency.

“Detectives from Lucky Summer Police Station have netted a key suspect believed to be the brains behind a counterfeit currency racket in Nairobi, seizing a sizeable haul of fake US dollars in the process,” the DCI said.

Suspicious cargo

The individual, identified as 38-year-old Felix Nyegesa, was intercepted after officers stopped the Prado in the Lucky Summer area, with a subsequent search of the vehicle raising suspicion when detectives discovered a locked metallic blue box hidden in the boot.

According to the detectives, when officers asked Nyegesa to open the box, he refused to cooperate, prompting detectives to escort him to the police station for further questioning.

“Acting on intelligence, the officers set their sights on a white Toyota Prado, registration number KDQ 401U, suspected of ferrying fake US currency. With a keen eye, they intercepted the vehicle in the Lucky Summer area and arrested the man behind the wheel, 38-year-old Felix Nyegesa,” DCI stated.

“When asked to open it, Nyegesa played hardball, flatly refusing to cooperate. Unwilling to let sleeping dogs lie, the officers ordered him to drive straight to the police station for further grilling,” the statement added.

Counterfeit haul revealed

At the police station, detectives opened the mystery box, recovering 68 bundles of counterfeit US dollar notes, each containing 100 fake bills and other materials, which investigators believe were being used to disguise the illicit currency.

“At the station, the mystery box finally gave up its secrets. Inside were sixty-eight bundles, each packed with 100 counterfeit US dollar notes. Also recovered inside the box were cartons, newspapers, cotton wool, sand and stones,” DCI noted.

“Nyegesa is currently in police custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment as detectives dig deeper to unravel the full extent of the syndicate,” DCI stated.
