A disturbing incident unfolded in Elgeyo Marakwet on Sunday night June 2, 2024, as a police officer unleashed a deadly rampage, resulting in the tragic deaths of two forest rangers before turning the gun on himself.

The incident, which has been confirmed by police in Elgeyo Marakwet, happened when a cop, identified as Evans Kimtai, embarked on a harrowing shooting spree at the Cheranganyi Forest Station, wielding an AK47 rifle.

The shocking attack left two rangers, aged 22 and 20, dead, while a third ranger sustained serious injuries.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge described the assailant’s actions as causing chaos, with shots fired indiscriminately before the fatal shootings occurred.

“He was armed and caused a lot of commotion shooting randomly before killing the two and injuring one other ranger,” Mulinge said.

Kimtai, hailing from the border patrol unit in Turkana, is said to have travelled from his base in Todonyang before launching the assault.

Reports suggest that the officer’s actions were driven by a suspected love triangle, with authorities linking the incident to personal disputes.

Details emerging from the investigation indicate that Kimtai had developed a relationship with one of the forest rangers, which had recently turned sour, leading to tensions and a ban on his presence at the forest station.

According to the police, Kimtai’s girlfriend was not at the forest station when he stormed in shooting indiscriminately.

The deceased cop had accused the friends of interfering in his relationship.

Authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting as they seek to understand the full extent of the tragedy.
