Police officers in Kisumu County have arrested two individuals and recovered three sacks containing suspected cannabis weighing 270 kilograms following a high-speed chase along the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway.

In a statement posted on its X account on Saturday, January 17, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) said officers from Ahero Police Station intercepted the vehicle after the driver failed to stop at a roadblock.

“Earlier today, police officers from Ahero Police Station in Kisumu County, while conducting routine road checks, flagged down a motor vehicle at a roadblock in Ahero along the Kisumu–Nairobi Highway,” NPS stated.

Driver defies roadblock order

According to NPS, the driver ignored orders to stop when signalled by officers, raised suspicions and led to the high-speed chase that ended with the vehicle being stopped in Ngere.

“The driver failed to stop when signalled, prompting a chase. The vehicle was eventually intercepted in the Ngere area,” the police service said.

Upon conducting a thorough search of the intercepted vehicle, officers made a significant drug seizure.

“Upon conducting a thorough search, officers discovered two 90kg sacks concealed in the cabin behind the driver’s seat, as well as another 90kg sack hidden on top of the fuel tank,” NPS stated.

All three sacks were found to contain suspected cannabis sativa, bringing the total weight of the suspected drug haul to 270 kilograms.

Two individuals in custody

According to NPS, the driver and another occupant of the vehicle were arrested and placed in custody with the recovered exhibits secured at Ahero Police Station, and the vehicle was detained pending further police action.

“The driver and another occupant of the vehicle were arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment,” NPS said.

NPS emphasised that the interception demonstrates the critical work being done to combat drug trafficking in the country.

“This interception underscores the critical work that the National Police Service continues to carry out in order to disrupt drug trafficking networks,” the statement read.

The police service reiterated its commitment to fighting narcotics and appealed for public support.

“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to the fight against narcotics and calls upon members of the public to support these efforts by reporting suspicious activities,” NPS stated.
