Police seize 90kg of bhang in Nairobi’s Nyamakima operation
In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the National Police Service (NPS) has confiscated approximately 90 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang, during a targeted operation in Nairobi’s Nyamakima area.
The operation took place on Tuesday when police officers deployed across Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) acted on intelligence pointing to illegal activities in Nyamakima.
Authorities intercepted a lorry suspected of transporting illicit goods, which was immediately escorted to the Nairobi Area Traffic yard for inspection.
“As part of the ongoing nationwide crackdown on narcotics and other illicit drugs, the National Police Service continues to intensify operations aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks and disrupting the movement of illegal substances,” read the NPS statement dated January 8, 2025.
“Yesterday, police officers deployed within Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) conducted a well-coordinated operation in the Nyamakima area, where they intercepted and impounded a lorry suspected of transporting illegal goods.”

During a thorough search, officers discovered fourteen sacks hidden within the vehicle, containing the 90 kilograms of bhang. The driver and his assistant were arrested on the spot and placed in custody, awaiting further investigations and eventual arraignment in court. The NPS described the operation as a significant blow to drug trafficking networks in the capital.
“The vehicle was escorted to the Nairobi Area Traffic yard for further inspection. A thorough search led to the discovery of fourteen sacks containing approximately ninety kilograms of unprocessed cannabis sativa (bhang) concealed inside.”
“The driver and his assistant were arrested and are currently in custody, pending further investigations and subsequent arraignment.”
Ongoing anti-narcotics efforts
The seizure forms part of broader nationwide efforts by the NPS to combat the circulation of illegal drugs. Recent operations in areas such as South B, Kahawa West, and Kibra have led to the recovery of varying quantities of cannabis and other narcotics. Authorities continue to rely on intelligence and public tips to identify and intercept traffickers before consignments reach the streets.
“The National Police Service remains committed to curbing the circulation of illegal narcotics and safeguarding public safety through proactive policing,” the NPS said in the statement. Officials stressed that drug trafficking not only fuels addiction but also contributes to other forms of crime, making such enforcement actions crucial for the protection of communities, particularly the youth.
Police continue to urge the public to report suspicious activities, emphasising that cooperation between law enforcement and citizens is essential to maintaining safer neighbourhoods.
