Police seize bhang and arrest person of interest in highway operation
By Kiprono Keileb, November 4, 2025Police in Busia County have arrested one person of interest and recovered six kilograms of cannabis sativa in a late-evening operation along the Nambale–Mumias Road.
According to the National Police Service (NPS) statement released on X on Tuesday, October 4, 2025, the person was nabbed by officers from Nambale Police Station who had mounted a routine roadblock on the busy route.
The officers intercepted the person of interest and, upon a quick inspection, discovered the narcotics concealed inside a travel bag.
In a statement, NPS said the seized cannabis weighed six kilograms and had an estimated street value of Ksh180,000.
“Officers from Nambale Police Station yesterday arrested a suspect and recovered six kilograms of cannabis sativa at a roadblock along the Nambale–Mumias Road,” the statement read in part.
The person of interest was taken into custody and is currently being processed before being arraigned in court. Police said the recovered drugs have been secured as an exhibit to aid in the case.
The NPS reiterated that the fight against narcotics and other illegal substances remains a top priority for law enforcement across the country.
“The suspect is in custody, awaiting processing and arraignment in court. The recovered narcotics, with an estimated street value of Ksh. 180,000 were secured as an exhibit,” added the statement.
The police further assured the public of their continued vigilance in tracking down individuals and networks involved in the trafficking and sale of banned substances.
“The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to the fight against narcotics and illicit brews,” said NPS.
The arrest comes at a time when security agencies have intensified operations to curb drug trafficking, particularly in border regions like Busia, which have long served as transit points for illegal trade.
The person of interest is expected to appear before a Busia court once investigations are complete.
