Police make arrest and seize illegal AK-47 in Wajir
The National Police Service (NPS) has arrested a person of interest in Wajir County after recovering an illegal AK-47 rifle.
In a statement on the NPS X account, the arrest took place on Monday, December 1, 2025, when officers on routine patrol in Sabuli intercepted the individual found in possession of the firearm.
The person of interest is now in police custody pending further action. The AK-47 rifle has been seized and secured.
“Today, 1st December 2025, officers of the National Police Service arrested a suspect in possession of an illegal AK-47 rifle while on patrol in Wajir County,” the statement reads.
“The suspect is now in police custody awaiting further action, and the firearm has been seized and secured.”

This latest arrest follows a series of firearm recoveries across the country, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms circulation.
On Saturday, November 29, 2025, police in Laikipia County received an AK-47 rifle that was voluntarily surrendered by a community member in the Louniek area of Kirima Sub-County.
According to the NPS, the surrender demonstrates growing confidence among residents in government-led peace and disarmament initiatives.
The surrendered weapon, along with one empty magazine, was placed in safe custody at Olmoran Police Station. This surrender increased the total number of firearms handed in voluntarily in Kirima Sub-County to ten, including nine AK-47 rifles, one carbine rifle, 56 rounds of ammunition, 13 magazines, and one bayonet.
The police described these recoveries as evidence of the impact of collaborative security efforts in the region.

Widespread firearm recoveries continue
Earlier, on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, police recovered another firearm in Nairobi’s Huruma estate during a routine night patrol. Officers had approached a suspicious individual who fled on noticing their presence, leaving behind a firearm.
The weapon was secured and documented by crime scene personnel, and investigations to identify and arrest the suspect are ongoing.
In Baringo County, police have also continued receiving illegally held firearms from members of the public. On Friday, 14th November 2025, four firearms were voluntarily surrendered in Orus Location, Tiaty East Sub-County.
These included four rifles, four magazines, and eight rounds of ammunition. According to the NPS, the continued cooperation of local leaders and communities is critical to maintaining regional security.
