Police in Busia arrest 2 persons of interest with over 163kgs of bhang
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, January 27, 2026Police in Busia County are holding two persons of interest after arresting them with over 163 kilograms of drug sacks, of what is suspected to be bhang. The arrests were made in two different instances following a crackdown by the anti-narcotics operation.
Confirming the incident on their social media handles on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the police have said that one of the individuals arrested was intercepted along the Busia-Kisumu Highway carrying five sacks of the illegal substance that weighed 163 kilograms on a motorcycle.
The other person of interest was arrested while travelling in a bus along the same route, and upon a search, police found him with 3.4 kilograms of a green substance, suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.
“In the first incident, officers manning a roadblock at Suo along the Busia–Kisumu Highway intercepted a motorcycle rider suspected of transporting illegal goods. Upon inspection, the suspect was found to be conveying five sacks, weighing 163.75 kilograms, of a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa. In a second interception later in the day, the officers stopped a bus travelling along the same route. A search of the vehicle led to the arrest of one passenger, who was found in possession of a bag containing about 3.4 kilograms of a green substance suspected to be cannabis sativa,” NPS stated.

The persons of interest were immediately arrested and placed in custody and are now awaiting arraignment.
Continuous crackdown on drug trafficking
The National Police Service has said that these successful interceptions underscore their unwavering commitment to disrupting the supply and distribution of narcotic drugs within Busia County as well as other regions of the country.

The police have committed to intensifying efforts to dismantle networks involved in any illicit drug trafficking in the country, and those arrested engaging in such acts will face the full force of the law.
The police have also called on the members of the public to raise an alarm in case of an instance of suspected drug trafficking to enhance the crackdown.
