Police granted more time to hold EACC forgery suspects
Police in Kitui County have secured more time to detain and conclude investigations on five suspects who were arrested on Friday while carrying a fake search at the home of a county government officer purporting to be officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The suspects include a female police officer Anne Mutheu who is attached to Muthangari police station in Nairobi County and a popular Kamba Benga artiste who leads Kalandini Boys band.
The suspects were arraigned before magistrate Maureen Kimani at Kitui court yesterday where police were granted seven more days to detain them as they carry out investigations on their conduct. They will take plea on July 29.
Director of Revenue
Before their arrest, the suspected imposters had arrested Kitui’s director of revenue over alleged involvement in corruption and raided her house where they claimed a huge sum of money was hidden. They had also produced to her a fake search warrant purportedly issued at Milimani Law Courts.
Upon arrest, the EACC through its spokesperson Eric Ngumbi disowned the five as fraudsters who were out to swindle unsuspecting public officers while claiming they are able to manipulate investigations in their favour.
Ngumbi said that the suspects are believed to be members of a criminal gang that has been defrauding unsuspecting public officers while posing as the commission’s detectives.
“They are fraudsters who have been deceiving unsuspecting public officials by promising to manipulate purported investigations in their favour,” Ngumbi said in a statement released to the media on Saturday.
Kitui central sub-county police commander Peter Karanja revealed that a search conducted on the suspects revealed a collection of fake job cards for the anti-corruption commission. Curiously, the fake job cards bore a similar title of Chief Executive Officer and Director of Anti Corruption Intelligence for all the suspects.
