Police officers in Kisumu and Migori counties have stepped up enforcement operations against the production and distribution of illicit alcoholic drinks in parts of western Kenya as part of an ongoing nationwide campaign aimed at safeguarding public health and enhancing community safety.

In a statement on their X handle on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) noted that in coordinated raids conducted in Muhoroni Sub-county in Kisumu County and Rongo Sub-county in Migori County, law enforcement officers successfully disrupted illegal brewing activities linked to the production of harmful alcoholic substances.

During the operations, police destroyed approximately 3,300 litres of Kangara, a crude alcoholic brew commonly associated with health risks due to unregulated production methods. In addition, officers recovered 20 litres of chang’aa, which were secured and documented as exhibits for further investigations.

“In separate operations conducted in Muhoroni Sub-County, Kisumu County, and Rongo Sub-County, Migori County, officers successfully disrupted illicit brewing activities and destroyed a total of 3,300 litres of kangara. Additionally, 20 litres of chang’aa were recovered and secured as exhibits,” NPS noted in a statement.

2 individuals nabbed

The NPS has noted that the raids led to the arrest of two persons of interest believed to be directly involved in the illicit brewing operations. However, several other individuals suspected to be part of the network managed to escape during the operations.

Police have since launched follow-up efforts to track down and apprehend the remaining persons of interest to dismantle the broader illegal supply chain.

The operations were carried out under the coordination of officers from the National Police Service, working closely with local administrators and community leaders who provided crucial intelligence that facilitated the raids.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to illicit alcohol production or distribution. Reports can be made at the nearest police station or through emergency numbers.

The public has also been encouraged to use the toll-free hotline or WhatsApp numbers to share information confidentially.

The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to eliminating illicit brews, citing their harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities, and vowed to continue sustained operations to ensure those involved are brought to justice.
