Police have arrested a person of interest after uncovering a suspected cannabis plantation concealed within a maize farm in Nakuru County, in what investigators say was an elaborate attempt to disguise illegal cultivation.

In a statement shared in X account on Sunday ,July 12,2026 ,the National Police Service (NPS) said officers from Kongoni Police Station made the discovery during an intelligence-led operation conducted at Moi Ndabi Village in Kongoni Location, where approximately half an acre of land had been planted with suspected cannabis sativa intercropped with maize.

According to police, officers acted on intelligence reports before raiding the farm, where they found the suspected bhang crop strategically planted among mature maize to avoid detection.

Investigators said the intercropping appeared to have been carefully planned to make the plantation resemble an ordinary maize farm.

“Acting on intelligence, the officers ventured into a maize plantation at Moi Ndabi Village, Kongoni Location, where, concealed among the towering crop, they discovered approximately half an acre of land under cultivation with suspected cannabis sativa (bhang),” the National Police Service said.

The operation led to the arrest of a person of interest, who is being held in police custody as investigations continue before being presented in court.

The National Police Service said the operation demonstrates the growing sophistication used by individuals involved in illegal drug cultivation but maintained that intelligence-led policing continues to frustrate such activities.

“One suspect was arrested during the operation and is currently in police custody pending arraignment,” the statement added.

Police call for public cooperation

The service reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal networks through intelligence gathering, proactive operations and collaboration with members of the public.

Police noted that despite increasingly sophisticated methods used to conceal illegal activities, security agencies remain vigilant in detecting and disrupting criminal enterprises.

“While offenders continue to devise increasingly sophisticated methods to conceal their illegal activities, the National Police Service remains vigilant through sustained intelligence-led policing, proactive operations and strong community partnerships to ensure criminal activities are detected and disrupted, and that those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement said.

The National Police Service has urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities through the nearest police station or its established reporting channels, saying public cooperation remains critical in the fight against crime and illegal drug trafficking.
