Police appeal for witnesses in Witima church incident as Gachagua plans showdown with IG Kanja
The National Police Service (NPS) has asked the public to assist in its ongoing investigation into the tear-gas attack at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, last month.
In a press release on February 15, 2026, the service said officers have recorded statements, reviewed footage, and analysed intelligence since the January 25 incident.
“Upon receiving reports of alleged criminal activity, the Service promptly initiated investigations in accordance with the law. Officers have recorded statements, reviewed available footage, and analysed intelligence to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and to identify any individuals responsible,” the release read.
The police stressed that the investigation’s success depends on public cooperation.
“As with all criminal investigations, the success and speed of the process depend significantly on formal reporting, detailed witness accounts, and the cooperation of complainants and members of the public,” it said.
The NPS added:
“While preliminary inquiries have been undertaken based on information in the public domain, comprehensive investigations require affected persons and witnesses to record official statements to enable evidence-based conclusions and possible prosecutions.”

They made a direct call for information.
“The NPS continues to appeal to anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist investigating officers. This cooperation is essential to ensure that justice is not only pursued but demonstrably upheld.”
The service also reaffirmed its neutrality.
“The Service remains firmly committed to impartiality, professionalism, and adherence to the rule of law. We reiterate that the National Police Service serves all Kenyans without fear or favour, and that all security concerns—regardless of political, social, or religious context—are handled with objectivity and in strict compliance with the Constitution,” the statement said.
The spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication, confirmed that investigations remain active and that updates will follow.
The attack occurred during a church service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other opposition leaders. Reports say tear gas was fired inside the church, causing panic. Congregants, including women and children, fled for safety. Some witnesses reported live bullets, vehicle damage, and injuries.
Gachagua called the incident a failed assassination attempt, blaming rogue police officers.
Gachagua demands church safety
On February 15, the same day as the police release, Gachagua spoke at PCEA Zimmerman in Roysambu, Nairobi. He said United Opposition leaders would visit Inspector General Douglas Kanja’s office on Monday, February 16, to demand answers on the probe.
“The investigation is over, and we know all the officers who attacked us in ACK Witima. We also know the Member of Parliament involved, but we see there is reluctance to forward the file to the ODPP,” he said.

Gachagua also urged the government to protect churches.
