Plight of stabbed woman stuck with Sh1m hospital bill
A 25-year-old Ugandan woman is stranded at a city hospital after failing to pay her medical bill amounting to almost Sh1 million.
Rebecca Kituyi escaped death narrowly after her husband stabbed her multiple times.
She is currently admitted at the Poplar Hospital on Chambers Road in Ngara.
She was initially admitted at the Mater Hospital Intensive Care Unit for two days before being transferred to the High Dependency Unit at the Ngara-based facility.
“It is only God that I am alive and talking to you my friends,” she said as she fought back tears.
Makadara Sub-County Police Commander Timon Odingo said the suspect, Meya Cosmas, was tracked down and arrested.
He was arraigned in court and is still in custody as investigations continue.
“The woman was seriously injured. We are yet to get the final report from doctors,” Odingo said.
Kituyi left Mbale district in eastern Uganda last year and landed a job as a househelp in Nairobi South C. Her husband had also travelled to Nairobi about four months ago after they parted ways in Uganda.
They reconciled and continued to live as a couple. However, in early September, Kituyi busted her husband entertaining another woman.
Medical report
“It seems he was infuriated when I caught him red-handed with a neighbour. When I asked him why he was doing that, his response was that I would not go back to work anymore,” she recalled.
“It did not occur to me that he was plotting to harm me,” she said. Days later on September 14, he pounced on her and stabbed her in the stomach six times. A medical report seen by People Daily shows Kituyi sustained “penetrating abdominal trauma”.
Poplar Hospital matron, Vivian Okutoyi, said she was admitted in HDU for six days before being moved to the general ward.
Hospital details
Contacted, a consular at the Uganda Embassy asked for the patient’s photo and hospital’s details.
A police medical examination report indicated Kituyi was stabbed with a sharp object multiple times, and classified degree of the injury as ‘grievous harm’.
Okutoyi said the patient is stable and ready for discharge, however, she has accrued a bill of Sh886,116, which keeps rising with her continued stay in the hospital.
So far, the family has only paid a deposit of Sh85,000 from Good Samaritans.
