Deadly tanker accidents

Tanker explosions in Kenya have historically had devastating consequences. In 2009, over 100 people were killed in Sachang’wan after a petrol tanker burst into flames as residents tried to scoop fuel. In 2021, 13 people lost their lives in Malanga, Siaya County, when another fuel tanker exploded.

More recently, A fuel tanker and a trailer burst into flames in a grisly accident along the Nairobi- Mombasa highway near Mtito Andei. These tragedies have highlighted the dangers posed by petroleum transport along highways and the urgent need for stronger safety measures.

The Karatina–Nyeri highway is a key route in Central Kenya, connecting farmers, traders, and travellers to major towns.

As investigations begin into the cause of the crash, officials are expected to examine whether mechanical failure, human error, or poor road conditions contributed to the accident.

The true extent of the tragedy remains unclear, with the number of casualties yet to be confirmed.
