In an effort to address environmental degradation and ensure sustainability when it comes to climate change, the People Daily team returned to Kibiko forest on Monday to track the progress of trees grown in the area last year.

 Kenya’s first fully digital newspaper, in partnership with the Greenbelt Movement, Kenya Forest Service and members of the local community, grew more than 200 trees in November, an initiative aimed at impacting residents as well as serving as an empathic symbol of the newspaper’s digital transformation journey.

 Nearly seven months after growing the trees, the survival rate has been positive, with 65 per cent growth.

Environmental experts from Greenbelt applauded the initiative.

 The after-care visit to the forest saw the regrowth of 37 trees.

The 32-year-old newspaper made a bold decision to halt its print operations last year; a move the managing editor, Emeka-Mayaka Gekara, says was informed by the urgency to produce and distribute journalism in a manner that is sensitive to environmental protection and serve consumer needs.
