Intensified rainfall

The Kenya Meteorological Department issued a forecast warning on October 3 indicating that ongoing rains across the country are expected to increase in intensity and spread from Friday, October 3, through Sunday, October 5, 2025.

The statement identified the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Western, and North-western regions as areas likely to receive significant downpours.

“The ongoing rains over several parts of the country are expected to intensify in amount, spread, and intensity from today through Sunday,” the department noted. Isolated heavy showers are expected to range between 20mm and 50mm within a 24-hour period, with some areas potentially exceeding 50mm.

Such rainfall raises the risk of localised flooding, waterlogging, and slippery roads, potentially disrupting daily activities, especially in urban areas with inadequate drainage systems. The department urged communities in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and plan travel and outdoor activities carefully.

Public preparedness

Kenya Met has released detailed forecast maps showing areas expected to receive the heaviest rainfall over the weekend. The maps serve as a planning tool for both urban centres such as Nairobi and rural regions, helping residents and local authorities identify specific localities at greater risk.

Kenyans have been advised to follow updates through official Kenya Met platforms and local media, as rainfall amounts and distribution may vary across different counties.

Need for action

Accurate weather forecasts play a key role in addressing Kenya’s recurring flooding challenges during the March–May and October–December rainy seasons. Thousands of households are affected annually, facing impacts that range from minor leaks to severe property damage and displacement.

Authorities and experts recommend practical measures such as clearing drains and gutters, elevating electrical outlets, improving land slopes, installing flood barriers, and using vegetation to improve drainage.

Combined with adherence to meteorological advisories, these steps aim to strengthen community preparedness and minimise damage during heavy rains.
