Patients in Malindi forced to sleep on floors due to congestion

Some patients are forced to sleep on the floor at Malindi Sub-County hospital due to shortage of beds.
Investigation at the health facility also revealed that patients are forced to share mattresses on the floor, with others share beds.

Speaking to the media, Mercy Kazungu on of the residents whose child had been admitted due to pneumonia infection at the facility, said his son had been sleeping on the floor for the last two weeks.

“I have been here for the last two weeks because my child had been admitted under pneumonia. All those days I have been spending here my son was sleeping on the floor due to shortage of beds. I saw some patients were also sharing mattresses and even beds,” she said.

Another patient who sought anonymity accused the County government for failing to address patient congestion at the facility.

He also blamed the County government for sinking billions of shillings to misplaced priorities.
“Why is the County government pumping billions of money to projects that are not priority to the low income people while patients are sleeping on floor. We thought devolution was meant to bring changes in services delivery but this is not what we seeing,” he said.

Kilifi County Executive committee member for health Peter Mwarogo in a press release quoted that the County government is currently renovating the wards facilities so as to improve access to health services to the people and create a better environment for the patient care.

The press release also indicates that the renovation will be completed soon and additional beds will be installed once the exercise is complete.

On September last year, Mung’aro made an impromptu visit at the facility to ascertain its status and promise to working on ways to managed patient congestion at the health facility.
