‘Nobody can grind you down’ – Orengo salutes Finance Bill demonstrators

By , June 19, 2024

Siaya Governor James Orengo has lauded the protesters who swam Nairobi’s Central Business District on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, to voice their concerns against the Finance Bill.

The citizens engaged in day-long demonstrations, and Orengo, quoting the 2010 Constitution, saluted them and urged them on because, he says, what they did is anchored in law.

“I salute those who have stood up against the Finance Bill. Article 1 of the Constitution is a foundational provision that allows the people to exercise their sovereignty and rights directly without parliament, the executive, courts, or even parties,” Orengo said.

“Nobody can grind you down.”

Mwago’s stance

Meanwhile, Starehe Constituency Member of Parliament Amos Mwago is among the legislators who have also supported the demonstrations. The Jubilee Party legislator is among those who are opposed to the bill.

“Good morning, friends of Starehe Constituency and Central Business District (CBD). I want to congratulate each and every one of you who participated in the campaign ‘Occupy Parliament’,” the first-term MP noted in a statement on X.

“You all did a tremendous job, and most importantly, you didn’t destroy or loot anyone’s property. This is a sign of a peaceful and civilized demonstration. (No vandalism, no distraction of properties, no looting.) Gen Z and millennials are the real deal.”

In an earlier post, Mwago stressed the need for the executive and parliament to hear and act on the concerns raised by Kenyans.

“To the brave men and women who come out in large numbers to protest against the punitive finance bill, I celebrate you. We celebrate; Kenyans must be seen; Kenyans must be heard; and Kenyans must be respected. Aluta continua. Say No to Finance Bill,” he said.

More protests and clashes with the law-enforcing agencies are expected on Thursday, June 20, when the bill will be introduced on the floor of the house for debate.
