The ceremony took place on Thursday, at Opoda Farm in Bondo. Raila Jr donned traditional attire and underwent a symbolic shaving ritual, marking his transition into family leadership. He was also presented with a spear and a shield, which represent authority and protection. A special headpiece was also placed on him.

In keeping with Luo cultural traditions, cattle were taken to Kango ka Jaramogi, the burial site of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The family led the cattle as part of the ritual, reinforcing their connection to ancestral customs and the late leader’s legacy.

The event drew numerous political leaders and family friends who came to pay respects and witness the new generation take centre stage. Among those present were Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and SK Macharia, Chairman of Royal Media Service.

Ceremony confirms family leadership

Speaking during the ceremony on Thursday, October 23, 2025, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga explained that the installation was part of Luo cultural practices meant to mark the end of the mourning period and to ensure continuity of leadership within the home.

“This is a traditional ceremony, which is a very short one performed before the camera because it is not a secret. It is a symbolic ceremony to hand over the seat of power in the home to Junior Raila, the son of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He is now the leader of the home together with his mother.”

Furthermore,  Oburu emphasised that the new role is not political, but purely cultural and familial.
