Only two African countries have publicly endorsed Kenya’s candidature of the non-permanent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) seat, a month before the vote slated for September in the US.

The endorsement is from Botswana and Namibia. On July 24, Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi promised his nation’s support while on a three-day state visit to Kenya.

Masisi said Kenya remains important to Botswana in terms of trade, politics, shared values hence they cherish the relationship.

“We support Kenya to be voted in for the non-permanent UNSC seat, Botswana will vote for Kenya and it is out of desire to further nourish our friendship and we trust Kenya,” he said.

Last August, Namibia’s President Hage Geingob promised his nation’s support for the Kenyan bid. 

In an earlier interview, Foreign Affairs Cabinet secretary Monica Juma said  Kenya’s accolade in global peace efforts would go a long way in furthering United Nation’s agenda for universal peace.

With the election set to be in Sep tember during the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Kenya low campaign has left tongues wagging at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Some officials at the ministry fear that Kenya’s defeat for the African Union Commission seat might be due to the slow pace in the lobbying for the global seat.

With the alleged Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti and Tanzania failure to vote for Kenya during the stages, the non-permanent UNSC seat could be at stake.

Effort by the People Daily to get the total  list of the countries in support of Kenya’s candidature from CS Juma was futile.

Kenya is positioning itself for a two-year non-permanent membership of the council in a bid to contribute in setting the agenda for global peace and stability. Only Kenya and Djibouti have so far expressed interest in the seat.
