A Nairobi court will today rule whether to detain a DCI officer, her husband and two other people suspected of being in possession of illegal firearms, impersonation of public officers and preparation to commit a felony.

Bridget Kamau, DCI officer in Mombasa, her husband Geoffrey Njuguna, Chris Musyoka and Lucia Mutunga will spend the night at Kilimani Police Station.

Prosecution yesterday told Senior Principal Magistrate David Ndungi that on Tuesday, officers from Kilimani DCI were on routine patrol when they flagged a suspicious black Toyota Land Cruiser without a number plate.

Upon searching it, the officers established that the number plate was hidden in the car trunk. 

They also found two firearms including a ceska pistol with its serial numbers erased from the body wand the other one with a serial number resembling a State firearm.

Mwangangi, who was driving the car, said it belonged to Njuguna. He was asked to inform his friend to come to Kilimani Police Station. 

“Njuguna arrived at the station in a Mercedes Benz with the front number plate not affixed…on conducting a search on the second car, a magazine meant for the ceska pistol was recovered,  seven rounds of ammunitions alongside a police pocket phone, two handcuffs bearing serial numbers resembling those of the government were also discovered,” prosecution told the court.

Njuguna said the items belonged to his wife, Kamau.

“Police suspect that the two cars are stolen. The ceska pistol is also thought to have been stolen from an unknown government armory,” the court heard.

Court was also told that Njuguna claimed he works at the Office of the President, a narrative that kept on changing every now and then.

Searches were conducted at their residences in Mlolongo, Athi River and Gikimbura in Thogoto as well as an office off Lenana road and several documents were recovered.

“From preliminary investigations, it will be appropriate for the office to liaise with among others, Ministry of Interior, the President Delivery Unit, National Police Service, Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Bankers Association, National Transport and Safety Authority to ascertain the authenticity of the documents,” argued the prosecution.

Lawyers representing the DCI officer and her husband opposed the application, arguing  prosecution had not proved any evidence to grant the prayers sought against the suspects.

Lawyers representing Mwangangi and Mutunga argued that they had been detained without just cause from Monday.
