Nyamira residents launch move to dissolve leadership
By Evans Nyakundi, January 13, 2025
Residents of Nyamira County have started the process of having their county government and Assembly dissolved over alleged persistent leadership wrangles in the two arms of government and failure to deliver services.
Residents target to collect at least 10,000 signatures from each of the 20 wards in the county to enable them petition the President and the Senate to dissolve both the county leadership.
Residents from the wards started collecting signatures from members of the public forming the basis for the two institutions to be dissolved.
A section of leaders led by Matara Abincha have also supported the dissolution of the county government which they say has completely failed to deliver services to the people of Nyamira despite receiving billions of shillings from the national government.
Residents involved in the collection of signatures claim that the county leadership is only engaged in supremacy battles and embezzlement of public funds.
Offering services
“This government is purely stealing from its citizens instead of offering them services which they were elected to do. The leader of the county government governor Amos Nyaribo must be sent packing by having his government dissolved if the county has to prosper like in the neighbouring counties,” Abincha told journalists.
In a bid to show their anger over alleged wrangles over leadership in the county, the residents have now vowed to continue boycotting the remittance of revenue to the county government for the fifth month in a row.
The business community led by Samwel Marigwa Kombo has also vowed to stop paying revenue to an alleged corrupt government that is riddled with turf wars. Kombo who is the chairman of traders in Kebirigo town has also accused members of the county Assembly of failing to oversight the county government after some of them were compromised by the county leadership.
Economic recovery
“This is a rotten a government that must be gotten rid off by being dissolved for Nyamira county to recover economically,” he noted. “Since the Nyaribo government came to power, no flagship project has been completed including the county government offices, governor’s and speaker’s residences and yet there is a lot of money being allocated to the projects every financial year,” he added.
Because of the tussle between the governor and the MCAs that has always led to unsuccessful attempts to impeach the former, the ward representatives have refused to approve part of the budget due to their belief that the governor has been misappropriating public funds, a move that has derailed development in the county .
Speaking during the launch of the exercise at Magombo market in Kitutu Masaba constituency, Joseph Ogeto who is one of those spearheading the process said they can’t afford to have a county government and a county Assembly which were unproductive to their subjects .
“We are targeting at least ten thousand signatures from every ward so that we can make our case strong in a bid to have the two bodies, the county government and the county Assembly dissolved,” Ogeto told journalists .
He said it was both unfortunate and retrogressive for the MCA’s to spend much of their time fighting and undermining one another while at the same time fighting with the executive arm of the county government.
Ogeto said the fights have only derailed and stagnated development in the county.
