Nuru Okanga, an ardent supporter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, collapsed while mourning the departed ODM Party leader.

While joining other Kenyans around the Nation Centre who had flocked to the city on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, following news of Raila Odinga’s death, Okanga, who had removed his shirt together with another unidentified man, was seen rolling on the ground as they struggled to come to terms with the loss of the former Prime Minister.

He was later rushed to the hospital by his colleagues, who tried to resuscitate him after he became unconscious during the emotional moment.

Witnesses were heard pleading with medical staff to intervene and save Okanga.

Earlier, while invoking Raila Odinga’s popular nickname “Tinga”, Nuru Okanga had mourned him as a man of his word who gave many young people opportunities to participate in leadership.

“Ulikuwa tinga; ukiongea, ulikuwa umeongea; umeenda, ulitupea kazi,” Nuru moaned.

Raila’s death

Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday morning during his routine morning walk while in the company of his daughter and sister in India, where he had gone for medical treatment.

During his official address to the nation, President William Ruto has ordered a state funeral with full military honours for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The president directed that the late former prime minister will be accorded a state funeral with full military honours and all attendant state protocols observed.

The president also declared a seven-day period of national mourning, during which the Kenyan flag will fly at half-mast across the country and in all Kenyan embassies abroad.

Reparation of his remains

President Ruto further named a delegation, led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, that will facilitate the proper organisation of the return of the late leader’s body.

Other members of the delegation include Cabinet Secretaries Kipchumba Murkomen and Hassan Joho, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, and Minority Leader Junet Mohammed, as well as members of the Odinga family, Jaoko Oburu Odinga, Kevin Opiyo Odinga, and Mama Ida Odinga, who will join the team in India.

Raila Odinga is now set to be buried within 72 hours, which is in tandem with his will and wishes

Kithure Kindiki was also tasked with chairing Raila’s burial committee.

“The committee is to be co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga and has been set up to coordinate the funeral arrangements,” President Ruto said.
