Number of reported crime drops, 2025 Economic Survey report says

The total number of crimes reported decreased from 104,842 in the previous year to 101,220 last year, 2024, representing a 3.5 per cent decrease.
According to the 2025 Economic Survey, there was a general decrease in all crimes reported to the police except for criminal damages, offences involving police officers and other penal code offences, which increased by 0.8, 36.7 and 16 per cent, respectively, in 2024.
Nairobi City police command station registered the highest share of all crimes reported at 9.6 per cent (9,717 cases), followed by Kiambu (8,865) and Meru (5487), representing 8.8 and 5.4 per cent, respectively.
The number of persons reported to have committed crimes decreased by 1.1 per cent to 103,256 in 2024 compared to 104,390 in 2023.
Traffic offences and offences involving tourists had the most significant declines in 2024, decreasing by 58.4 per cent and 42.6 per cent, respectively.
Other offences
The number of other offences against persons and stealing jointly accounted for 42.0 per cent of all the crimes reported in 2024.
Marsabit police command station recorded the highest percentage increase in crimes reported to police at 41.0 per cent in 2024.
Other command stations that recorded a percentage increase in reported crimes were Narok, West Pokot, and Migori at 34.3, 28.6, and 23.2 per cent, respectively.
During the review period, Taita Taveta, Trans Nzoia, and Machakos recorded a decline in crimes reported at 32.4, 22.1, and 15.7 per cent, respectively.
The overall number of convicted prisoners decreased by 23.6 per cent, from 80,071 to 61,175 in 2024, with the number of convicted adult prisoners (18 years and above) decreasing by 23.9 per cent to 60,641 during the same period.
On the other hand, the population of convicted juvenile prisoners (under 18 years) slightly increased to 534 in 2024 from 418 in 2023.
In 2024, police repossessed 104 illegally held firearms compared to 179 repossessed in 2023. A total of 31 firearms were surrendered in 2024, a drop from 117 firearms surrendered in 2023. The survey also indicates that police recovered 4,548 rounds of ammunition in 2024, up from 2,248 rounds in 2023.
