The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has erected a roadblock at Uthiru along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway to conduct compliance checks on motorists ferrying passengers to Nairobi after the long Easter holiday.

The Authority erected the roadblock on Monday, April 2, 2026, on a route that is typically congested during the holiday periods.

Meanwhile, the NTSA director general, Nashon Kondiwa, stated that the authority, in collaboration with the National Police Service (NPS), had intensified enforcement operations nationwide to curb fatal crashes during the festive period.

“Slow down and adhere to posted limits. Drunk driving impairs judgment and reaction time; if you have consumed alcohol, do not get behind the wheel,” Kondiwa said.

At the same time, he warned that a combination of irresponsible driving and slippery roads during the rainy season heightened the risk of accidents as families travelled to and from holiday destinations.

“Failure to maintain lane discipline, including dangerous overtaking and weaving, puts all road users at risk. For those whose vehicles break down, ensure you park safely off the road and place warning triangles at a sufficient distance,” he added.

Easter travel advisory

The setup of compliance checkpoints at Uthiru comes days after the National Transport and Safety Authority issued a travel advisory to members of the public ahead of the Easter Festivities, cautioning against reckless driving.

In a statement released on Thursday, April 2, 2026, NTSA announced measures in place ahead of the festivities while in collaboration with the National Police Service.

At the time, the Authority urged motorists and passengers to prioritise road safety.

In addition, NTSA announced that the Police Officers have intensified enforcement operations nationwide to reduce fatal crashes during this festive period.

“Fellow motorists, as we commemorate this Easter season, I urge every driver and passenger to prioritize safety on our roads. The National Transport and Safety Authority, in close collaboration with the National Police Service, has intensified enforcement operations nationwide to reduce fatal crashes during this festive period,” NTSA announced.

Road safety measures

NTSA has explained that while speeding remains a leading cause of death nationwide, Motorists are hence cautioned against dangerous behaviours.

The Authority has further emphasised the effects of drunk driving, noting that such driving impairs judgment and reaction time.

“Let me address specific dangerous behaviours. Speeding remains a leading cause of death. Slow down and adhere to posted limits. Drunk driving impairs judgment and reaction time; if you have consumed alcohol, do not get behind the wheel,” NTSA stated.

At the same time, NTSA explained that driver fatigue is equally deadly, urging drivers to rest adequately before long journeys and take breaks every two hours.

NTSA has cautioned that failure to maintain lane discipline, including dangerous overtaking and weaving, puts all road users at risk.

On the other hand, for those whose vehicles break down, NTSA has urged them to ensure they park safely off the road and place warning triangles at a sufficient distance.

Likewise, NTSA has warned that unroadworthy vehicles-those with defective brakes, worn-out tyres, or faulty lighting-will be impounded immediately.

“We shall deploy traffic enforcement officers, speed cameras, and sobriety checkpoints at strategic points. Remember: every life matters. Let us arrive alive and celebrate with our loved ones. Drive responsibly,” NTSA warned.
