Here is what you need to know in order to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

1. Spotlight on KCPE, KNEC

After the release of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results last week, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has continued to find itself under the spotlight over alleged irregularities.

The examination body is expected to be under more limelight after Kitengela International School, Set Greenhill Academy Mixed Day and Boarding, and Junior School, namely Pius Kiio and Everlyn Kemuma Omwoyo, moved to court to stop Form One selection until their case against KNEC is heard and determined.

The Form One selection exercise kicked off on Monday, November 27, 2023, but the move by the schools to take KNEC to court could stall the process altogether.

The petitioners want KNEC investigated for activities that preceded the release of the 2023 KCPE results, which they claim are marred by irregularities.

2. Court to rule on Finance Act

The High Court is expected to deliver its judgement on the controversial Finance Act.

The act was controversial given how it divided public opinion, with the opposition Members of Parliament vehemently debating against it, but after it was passed, President William Ruto signed it into law.

After its passage, a case was filed in court with the petitioners, seeking to have it declared unconstitutional. The petitioners are Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition, and the Law Society of Kenya, among others.

The judgement is expected to be delivered by Justices David Majanja, Christine Meoli, and Lawrence Mugambi, and three outcomes are expected from the bench.

The act can be quashed entirely, some parts declared null and void, or a new petition can be filed at the Court of Appeal, depending on which party feels unsatisfied following the judgement.

3. Champions League return

The UEFA Champions League action returns for this week’s group stage matches, with eight games lined up for Tuesday.
