NEMA announces crackdown in Kitui targeting hotels, apartments and hospitals
Environmental inspectors from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) have launched an operation in Kitui County targeting facilities suspected of illegally discharging effluent into the environment, in line with the Water Quality Regulations 2024.
According to a statement by NEMA on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the ongoing exercise, which has so far covered hotels, hospitals, petrol stations and multi-storey residential apartments, seeks to identify sources of pollution and ensure compliance with national environmental standards.

“NEMA Environmental Inspectors have embarked on monitoring and stoppage of illegal Effluent Discharge in Kitui County to identify illegal effluent discharges, in accordance to the water quality Regulations 2024,” NEMA noted.
What was reviewed
During the inspections, teams reviewed operational systems such as waste handling, wastewater treatment processes, and discharge points.
Facilities found to have gaps in compliance were issued with restoration orders requiring immediate corrective action to meet environmental requirements.

The Director of Environmental Enforcement, Dr Ayub Macharia, who led the operation, said the authority will take firm action against violators, including closure and prosecution for those who fail to comply.
“Facilities found to be non-compliant will not be allowed to continue operations; instead will face prosecution,” Macharia stated.
