Ndindi Nyoro urges govt to extend HELB funding to private college students
By People Daily Digital Reporter, December 13, 2025Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has urged the government to extend Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funding to students enrolled in private colleges, emphasising that these institutions play a significant role in national development and contribute greatly to expanding the country’s human capital.
Speaking in Thika during the 4th graduation ceremony of JFC Munene College of Health Sciences, where over 1,000 graduates were conferred with various academic awards, Nyoro emphasised that students pursuing critical courses such as medicine and other technical fields in private institutions go on to serve the country just like their counterparts in public universities, and therefore deserve equal support as they contribute directly to national development.
“The entrepreneurs who have private institutions of higher learning, colleges, are literally doing government work. Anyone who has a college in Kenya is adding to the human capital of the Republic of Kenya,” he said.
“Therefore, it is important that the learners in the health colleges and other colleges in Kenya, which are private, must also start being beneficiaries of the Higher Education Loans Board,” he added, stressing the importance of equal financial support to ensure fairness and inclusivity.
Savings culture
Addressing the medical graduates, the MP encouraged young professionals to adopt a saving culture as they enter the workforce and to invest in productive ventures such as businesses to build wealth and secure their financial futures.
“Don’t just invest in the traditional ways. When you get that job and you are saving your money, there are many investment opportunities. Not just buying a plot. Not just going to your local shopping centre. There is much more,” he said.
“To think about where you can put your money to optimise it, so that as you work, even the money you are saving is also working for you on the side,” he reiterated.
Solution providers
While congratulating the graduates, Cecilia Ochol, Director of JFC Munene College of Health Sciences, urged them to face the world with optimism and to become solution providers in their communities and beyond.
She encouraged them not to lose hope but to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to overcome challenges and pursue their life goals.
“Don’t give up, even when the road gets tough. Continue believing in yourselves and trusting in the plans you have set for yourselves to achieve,” she said.
