Nakuru court bars late Ann Mugweru’s husband from threatening her family
By Zipporah Ngwatu, June 24, 2026A Nakuru court has blocked the person of interest in the murder of Ann Mugweru, Edwin Muthomi Kaunga, from threatening the family members of the deceased.
The family of Ann Mugweru, through a certificate of urgency, sought court orders blocking the Edwin listed as the respondent from harassing, intimidating and threatening them in pursuit of justice for their late kin.
Senior Principal Magistrate Adet Okello, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, issued a conservatory order barring Edwin from harassing and threatening the deceased’s family until the application is heard and determined.
“That pending the hearing and determination of this application, an interim protection order be and is hereby issued restraining the respondent (Edwin), either by himself or through his agents, servants, and proxies, from harassing, tormenting, intimidating and threatening the applicant (Serah) and her family,” Magistrate Okello ordered.
Magistrate Okello has also directed the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Nakuru Police Station, to oversee and ensure compliance with and enforcement of these interim orders pending the hearing and determination of the application.
Further, the court has directed Serah, the applicant, to serve the application, together with the court’s order, to Edwin and Mike Mbuvi Sonko, listed as an interested party, within three days from today.
Edwin was to be charged with the murder of the deceased wife contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.
However, the court heard that he could not plead to the charges after a mental health expert stated that he was not fit for plea-taking, and the plea-taking was deferred.
According to the court papers, the family, through Serah Mugweru, sister to the deceased, Edwin has been issuing threats to the family while in custody pending.
“Shockingly, upon being taken into custody, the respondent (Edwin) herein has since been threatening, harassing, intimidating and tormenting the applicant (Serah) herein and her family,” part of the application reads.
Notably, Ann’s family stated that Edwin had been exerting the said threats through a certain phone number from prison, instilling fear in them.
The matter will be heard on July 7, 2026.
