The Nairobi Hospital has paid tribute to veteran gynaecologist Job Obwaka following his death at the age of 83.

In a statement issued on Saturday, May 2, 2026, the hospital’s Board of Management said it received the news with profound sorrow and described Obwaka as a respected doctor and leader who served the institution for many years.

Chairman Barcley Onyambu said Obwaka made a lasting contribution to both patient care and hospital leadership.

“It is with profound sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Job Obwaka, a distinguished member of our medical fraternity and a valued leader within The Nairobi Hospital,” the statement said.

The hospital said Obwaka served as a long-standing admitting consultant, where he built a strong reputation for clinical excellence, professionalism and dedication to patients.

According to the statement, his work earned him respect from colleagues and patients alike.

The hospital added that his contribution to medical practice within the institution remained significant and enduring.

Obwaka also served as a member of the board of management in 2025.

The hospital said his stewardship helped shape governance and strategic direction at the facility during his time on the board.

Obwaka was widely known in Kenya’s medical circles as an experienced gynaecologist who dedicated decades of service to women’s health.

He built a long career in medicine and became one of the best-known specialists in his field.

Many patients and fellow doctors viewed him as a senior figure in obstetrics and gynaecology.

His death marks the loss of one of the country’s veteran medical practitioners.

Reports indicated that Obwaka died on Friday evening, May 1, 2026, after he was rushed unconscious to hospital.

He was later pronounced dead on arrival, according to family members quoted in earlier reports.

Recent public attention

Obwaka had recently returned to public attention after his arrest alongside other directors linked to a leadership dispute at The Nairobi Hospital.

He appeared in court with other officials over accusations related to conflict of interest.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) criticised the arrest at the time, citing his age, long service and standing in the profession.

The Nairobi Hospital said it was standing with his family, loved ones and staff at his clinic during the mourning period.

“On behalf of the Board, Management, The Nairobi Hospital staff, and the entire hospital community, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and the staff at his clinic,” Onyambu said.
