Nairobi City County has issued a public health alert as heavy rains continue to affect the region, urging residents to report any incidents that could endanger public health.

The alert, shared on the county’s official X account on November 1, 2025, highlights risks associated with ongoing downpours under the Public Health Sub-sector.

Residents are advised to contact the Nairobi City County Emergency Response and Dispatch Centre via the free call line 1508 for immediate assistance. The alert carries the hashtag #YourHealthYourSafety#OurPriority.

Hazards during rainy period

The county warns of specific dangers linked to the heavy rains. These include flooding in low-lying areas, sewer overflows or pipe bursts that could contaminate water sources, dirty or foul-smelling tap water indicating pollution, fallen electrical poles or dangling wires posing electrocution risks, fallen trees blocking roads or damaging property, drowning in swollen rivers or flooded streets, and submerged buildings leading to structural instability and displacement.

“Due to the ongoing rains, please report any events or incidents that pose a risk to public health, flooding, sewer overflows or pipe bursts, dirty or foul-smelling tap water indicating pollution, fallen electrical poles or dangling wires posing electrocution risks, fallen trees blocking roads or damaging property, drowning in swollen rivers or flooded streets, and submerged buildings or houses,” read the alert in part.

Meteorological forecast

The alert aligns with the Kenya Meteorological Department’s forecast on October 31, 2025, predicting rainfall and thunderstorms across much of the country through November 1. Strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, or about 12.5 metres per second, are expected in north-western Kenya.

The highlands west of the Rift Valley, including Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kericho, and Nakuru counties, will see afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, while mornings remain partly sunny.

In the highlands east of the Rift Valley, covering Nairobi, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, and Embu, mornings will be cloudy, clearing to sunny intervals before afternoon storms. Nairobi’s temperatures are forecast to be between 16°C and 23°C, with residents advised to plan travel around potential localised flooding.

Other regions, including north-western counties like Turkana and Samburu and north-eastern areas such as Marsabit, Mandera, and Garissa, will experience scattered rains and sunny intervals. The south-eastern lowlands, including Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, and Kajiado, expect light morning rains and isolated afternoon showers, while the coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu, will see mild showers interspersed with sunny periods.

Recent incidents

The alert follows a landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County, where the Kenya Red Cross reported injuries in Moror Village and Chesongoch Centre after heavy overnight rains on November 1, 2025.

A similar 2024 landslide in Tuturung, Sambirir Ward, Marakwet East Sub-County, killed two people and injured another. Authorities urge vigilance and adherence to safety measures as rains persist in Nairobi and across the country.
