Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera has stated that President William Ruto should sack those responsible for the infiltration of goons during protests demanding justice for the late Albert Ojwang in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

Speaking at a local TV station on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Nabwera stated that Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) Douglas Kanja should be relieved of their duties due to their incompetence.

“The one I gave responsibility to here is unable to fix it. Can we get somebody else to fix this? The country is bigger than all of us. Three years into the presidency, Ruto knows who can do what and who is not able to do what. The police are watching civilians take charge to control crowds with batons,” he stated.

“It speaks a different story. The CS for Interior and the IG are not in control, and the pressure will mount on the head of state. So he has to cut the people,” he added.

A group of whip- and club-wielding motorcyclists assaulted protesters on June 17, 2025, who were calling for an end to police brutality and demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.

Some youths continued with their protests as police watched from a distance, with the goons carrying whips, terrorising other protesters and bystanders alike.

In the mayhem, a mask vendor was shot at close range by police during the protests. He is now receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

According to a statement on June 17, 2025, by vocal activist Hanifa Adan, she was beaten up by goons who also took her mobile device.

“One of the goons beat me up and took my phone, and I caught his jacket trying to get my phone back as he continued bodying me. Other people joined and caught him; I took my phone, and he got beaten up!” she said.

Ojwang’s murder

Ojwang was arrested in Homa Bay County on June 6, 2025, over defamation of DIG Lagat. He was transported more than 350 kilometres to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where he was found dead.

On Monday, June 16, 2025, pressure mounted on Lagat, whose complaint led to the arrest, as civil society leaders, lawyers, and political figures dismissed his stepping aside as cosmetic and demanded his immediate arrest and prosecution.

Lagat eventually stepped aside, paving the way for investigations into the matter.
