Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has blamed President William Ruto for appointing Kipchumba Murkomen as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration.

Speaking during a live interview by K24 TV on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Muturi said that the position of Interior CS requires a mature person who is not easily excited about the exercise of power.

“They say if you want to test a man, give him power. I think power has gotten to his (Murkomen) head, and he is a fairly young man who is excited about the exercise of power, and there is also an element of childishness in him,” Muturi observed.

Deliberate mistake

He noted that Ruto made both an unintentional and a deliberate mistake in appointing Murkomen to the sensitive docket.

“Ruto made a mistake in giving such an excitable youth the responsibility to head a docket such serious as the interior. Murkomen is easily excitable as a youth, and you can see it in his behavior,” Muturi stated.

“When you give him a serious docket like Interior, even you, as the appointing authority, we must begin questioning your capacity at leadership. This is a serious docket that needs a mature person because the job requires a lot of reflection in the statement you make.”

Calls for Murkomen’s dismissal

The remarks come just weeks after Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei demanded the immediate sacking of Murkomen from the docket.

Addressing the media on Monday, June 9, 2025, Cherargei decried the rising cases of lawlessness and criminal activities across the country.

In a bold proposal, Cherargei said Kindiki should be allowed to serve both as Deputy President and Interior CS, insisting he can manage both offices, unlike Murkomen, whom he accused of absentee leadership.

“In fact, the crime rate continues to go up and up. I think there is a possibility that Professor Kindiki can become the Minister of Interior and also become the Deputy President because the minister in charge is busy traveling across the country and is now in Swaziland when the security of the country is deteriorating,” Cherargei said.

Murkomen has come under fire for ordering police officers to shoot protesters who approach a police station, and the recent complaint to the judiciary over what he termed lenient bail bonds for arrested protesters.
