President Museveni’s son general Muhoozi Kainerugaba is calling for an end to the war in Ukraine amid international efforts for a ceasefire.

Muhoozi in a tweet on Sunday night February 26, 2023, revealed his plan to visit Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“I will soon begin my great tour to the countries to the north. I will start by visiting our Russian hero, Vladimir Putin. I will also visit His Excellency Zelensky, President of Ukraine. It’s time to bring this insane war to an end!” Muhoozi tweeted.

Muhoozi’s call for an end to the war comes amid increased international pressure for a ceasefire as February 20 marked the first anniversary since the conflict broke out.

Zelensky recently said he wants to meet Chinese president Xi Jinping to discuss China’s proposals on ending the war in Ukraine.

Speaking on the first anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he said the proposal signalled that China was involved in the search for peace.

“I really want to believe that China will not supply weapons to Russia,” he said.

China’s plan calls for peace talks and respect for national sovereignty.

However, the Chinese plan does not explicitly state if Russia must withdraw its troops from Ukraine.

The Chinese peace plan also condemns the usage of unilateral Western sanctions on Russia which is the aggressor in this case.

The Chinese authorities have so far not publicly responded to Zelensky’s call for a summit with Xi.

Meanwhile, Russia hailed the Chinese peace proposals.

“We share Beijing’s views,” the foreign ministry in Moscow said in a statement.

Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Beijing was considering supplying weapons and ammunition to Russia – a claim strongly denied by Beijing.

On Friday, American media again reported that the Chinese government was considering sending drones and artillery shells to Moscow.

Asked about the Chinese plan, US President Joe Biden told ABC News on Friday: “Putin’s applauding it, so how could it be any good? I’ve seen nothing in the plan that would indicate that there is something that would be beneficial to anyone other than Russia.”
